Being stripped of hair salons doesn’t mean we have to be stripped of that expression, it just means we have to pivot. For a lot of black women having a fresh weave or newly braided cornrows can be a self-esteem booster, they feel back to “themselves.” It doesn’t mean we don’t love wearing our hair out, it means that our hair is an outlet of expression. Either way, hair is embedded in the culture and during times like this, not knowing how to do your hair can feel frustrating because you’ve lost a sense of your identity.
For some girls, learning how to do their own hair was taught in the household watching parents cornrow siblings' hair or watching in the mirror as mom pressed our edges with a hot comb to later slick it up into a bun.
So, where do black women turn during the pandemic while still having to show up to Zoom classes and meetings looking put together, but with hair salons closed? We turn to ourselves.
